The first comprehensive treatment of active inference, an integrative perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior used across multiple disciplines.
Active inference is a way of understanding sentient behavior–a theory that characterizes perception, planning, and action in terms of probabilistic inference. Developed by theoretical neuroscientist Karl Friston over years of groundbreaking research, active inference provides an integrated perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior that is increasingly used across multiple disciplines including neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy. Active inference puts the action into perception. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of active inference, covering theory, applications, and cognitive domains.

Active inference is a “first principles” approach to understanding behavior and the brain, framed in terms of a single imperative to minimize free energy. The book emphasizes the implications of the free energy principle for understanding how the brain works. It first introduces active inference both conceptually and formally, contextualizing it within current theories of cognition. It then provides specific examples of computational models that use active inference to explain such cognitive phenomena as perception, attention, memory, and planning.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book- this is the real deal
Dense and intense- but so innovative and novel in its ideas and thinking. Allows one to truly learn with every page read. Thanx Karl et al.

The first few chapters are readily understood by anyone with a bit of Bayesian background. Unlike many texts that have equations, the authors have made a special effort to avoid 'understanding is left to the reader.' Intuitive, real world explanations are given for variables and the relationship to active inference in a processor / brain is usually very clear. This is a normative exposition of the topic, so my comments are not necessarily criticisms, but concerns about the theory itself. For one, the idea of reciprocal interaction with the environment is obviously lacking the (sometimes) majority of cases where activity in the environment impinges upon the agent irrespective of the agent's particular activity. For another, the critical aspect of how an agent's model development establishes Bayesian hypotheses and their preferences / weights is beyond the theory (Bayesians readily admit to the 'subjectivity' but the word is a proxy for magical thinking, and hides the hardest nut to crack.). Also lacking is the intuitive sense we all have that active inference is a process that 'ages' for unknown reasons, as evident in the way novelty and exploration become less impactful (to humans) over time, and satisfaction / exhaustion comes to the fore. Note again that having the book elicit these thoughts about the frontier state is a tribute to its cogent writing.
