Why do people lie? Do gender and personality differences affect how people lie? How can lies be detected?
Detecting Lies and Deceit provides the most comprehensive review of deception to date. This revised edition provides an up-to-date account of deception research and discusses the working and efficacy of the most commonly used lie detection tools, including:

Behaviour Analysis Interview
Statement Validity Assessment
Reality Monitoring
Scientific Content Analysis
Several different polygraph tests
Voice Stress Analysis
Thermal Imaging
EEG-P300
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
All three aspects of deception are covered: nonverbal cues, speech and written statement analysis and (neuro)physiological responses. The most common errors in lie detection are discussed and practical guidelines are provided to help professionals improve their lie detection skills.

Detecting Lies and Deceit is a must-have resource for students, academics and professionals in psychology, criminology, policing and law.

Thus far, the definitive book on deception detection.

The lesson here is there is no Pinocchio nose to detecting lies. No magic wand or secret method.

It's a minefield and for any methodology to be of any real use in law enforcement or court testimony, a lot more study and development is necessary before we'll be anywhere near close to a achieving really useful tools.

Pretty good read, and was impressed with the sources used for support of the author’s conclusions. The author obviously did his homework on this book. This being said, readers need to remember that there is no such thing as a lie detector, i.e. polygraph, voice stress analysis, or even brain scans. Any exam that detects stress still needs a trained examiner to evaluate and analyze the stress detected. All of the aforementioned devices only detect physiological (emotional) stress in response to questions that carry the consequence jeopardy.

This book should be considered the first reference for anybody who is serious about undertaking research into deception, detecting deception, and learning about the strengths and weaknesses associated with a range of methods used to detect deception. It reviews a range of empirical findings and methods associated with (but not just limited to) nonverbal, verbal, and physiological indicators of deception. As a researcher, I can appreciate the immense effort it must have taken Aldert Vrij to put this book together. It would be great if a new edition of this text is published in the coming years.
This book alongside the newly published ‘Detecting Deception: Current challenges and cognitive approaches’ and ‘Applied issues in investigative interviewing, eyewitness memory, and credibility assessment’ are essential resources for anyone who is serious about reviewing the latest findings in deception focussed research.

On y apprend énormément...

This book presents a great review of the research on deception, debunking many myths, and without seeming dull or dry, although this clearly is a serious book for academics or professionals, which is nice, considering how most every other book on this subject is rather sensationalist and often based on very limited subjective experience.

I recently purchased Aldert Vrij's book for a friend's birthday gift. As a forensic psychology student, I already own a copy of Vrij's work, and have read it many times. The book is extremely interesting; the finer details have greatly improved my studies, however it is captivating in a way that I can casually read it on a day out at the beach etc.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in forensic psychology or lie detection. It is suitable for anyone; not just academics or scholars, and I really enjoyed this book.
    Buy it!
